Designing Blog Post Layouts That Encourage Longer Reading Sessions

Typography Sets the Reading Rhythm

The typeface you choose for long-form articles does more than look smart. It governs how effortlessly a visitor moves from one line to the next, and how long they are willing to stay. On design-logix.co.uk we have tested serif and sans-serif pairings across hundreds of posts, and the pattern is consistent: comfortable body text keeps people scrolling. A clean serif for paragraphs, matched with a restrained sans-serif for headings, gives readers a clear hierarchy without visual noise.

Font size matters just as much as the family. Anything below 16px feels cramped on modern screens, while 18px to 20px hits the sweet spot for sustained reading. Line height should sit between 1.5 and 1.7 times the font size. When lines are too tight, the eye loses its place; when they are too loose, the paragraph fragments into disconnected sentences.

Spacing Creates Breathing Room

Whitespace is not wasted space. Generous margins and paragraph spacing signal to readers that the article is worth their time. We recommend at least 1.5em between paragraphs so the text never resembles a wall of words. Sections should be separated by clear headings with extra space above them, giving the eye natural pause points.

Measure, or line length, is the silent engagement killer. Aim for 60 to 75 characters per line on desktop. Wider columns force the eye to travel too far, and readers quietly abandon the page. Constrain the article container even if the overall layout is wide.

Sidebar Decisions That Protect Focus

Sidebars can support long-form reading or sabotage it. A cluttered sidebar full of ads, social widgets and unrelated links pulls attention away from the article. The safest approach is a narrow sidebar that appears only after the first few paragraphs, or none at all on mobile.

If you must include one, prioritise elements that reward the reader:

  • A table of contents that tracks scroll position
  • Author information that builds trust
  • One or two related articles, not ten

Sticky sidebars work well when they hold navigation aids rather than promotions. The moment a sidebar competes with the content for attention, reading time drops.

Structure Long Articles With Clear Signposts

Readers skim before they commit. Numbered steps, subheadings and pull quotes give them landmarks to return to. Consider these layout cues for a typical post:

  1. Open with a short hook paragraph before the first subheading.
  2. Break the body into sections of three to five paragraphs.
  3. Insert a pull quote or image every four hundred words or so.

These elements do not just decorate the page. They tell the reader how much effort is left and make finishing feel achievable.

Measure, Test and Refine

Engagement is not guesswork. Track average scroll depth and time on page, then adjust typography and spacing accordingly. Small changes, such as increasing line height by 0.1 or widening margins by 20px, often produce measurable gains.

Line height1.6
Line length60-75 characters
Good layout is invisible; readers simply keep reading.

When typography, spacing and sidebars work together, visitors stay longer, absorb more and return. Design the page around the reader, and the metrics will follow.
